There is no definitive data on when or how it arrived <b style=\"text-align: justify\">in Apulia<\/b>, but it is known that its characteristics are very similar to those of Zinfandel, a European grape that made its way to California, and Plavac Mali, a <b style=\"text-align: justify\">typical grape<\/b> from certain areas of Croatia.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_DidefaultA\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17197\" src=\"https:\/\/varvaglione.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/prim-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"primitivo di manduria\" width=\"3840\" height=\"2160\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_DidefaultA translation-block\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Certainly, Primitivo was already present <b>in Apulia<\/b> at the time of the Greeks, when the nectar of this fruit was immediately identified as \u201c<b>merum<\/b>,\u201d <b>pure wine<\/b>, in contrast to the more traditional \u201c<b>vinum<\/b>,\u201d which referred to <b>wine mixed<\/b> with water, honey, or other added substances, making it sweeter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_Didefault translation-block\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The name <b><a href=\"https:\/\/varvaglione.com\/en\/primitivo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Primitivo<\/a><\/b> is attributed to the grape itself, thanks to its main characteristic: early ripening compared to all other <b>red berry<\/b> varieties present <b>in Apulia<\/b>. In fact, it reaches full maturity around the end of August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_Didefault translation-block\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are different regions where it is cultivated, and various aging methods produce <b><a href=\"https:\/\/varvaglione.com\/en\/vini-di-puglia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Apulian wines<\/a><\/b> that, while distinct from one another, share unmistakable notes and characteristics: an intense red color with violet highlights, aromas of small red fruits on the nose, and a distinct scent of plum and other spices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_DidefaultA\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17198\" src=\"https:\/\/varvaglione.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/primitivodimanduria-papale_papale-oro-su-legno-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"primitivo di manduria papale linea oro\" width=\"5000\" height=\"2572\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_DidefaultA translation-block\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/varvaglione.com\/en\/varvaglione-1921\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Varvaglione family<\/a>, for its part, has made this variety its flagship wine worldwide.
